Press Statement by ACCCIM On the Ministry of Transport’s Enforcement of Rulings on Overloaded Lorries

The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) supports the Government’s commitment to enhancing road safety. Compliance with load limits is both a legal duty and a shared social responsibility to protect all road users and public infrastructure.

However, ACCCIM is concerned that the current load limits are largely determined by the carrying capacity of certain bridges—mainly on Grade A and B roads—rather than the manufacturer’s load specifications. This has resulted in significant under-utilisation of carrying capacity, leading to higher operational costs and inefficiencies across the logistics sector.

We urge the Government to undertake a comprehensive review and upgrading of existing bridge and road infrastructure to ensure alignment with modern vehicle load standards. In the interim, clear and visible signage should be installed to indicate bridges or roads with lower permissible load limits, supported by a transparent timeline for progressive infrastructure enhancement. State and local authorities should also be empowered to enforce compliance and oversee the proper implementation of road and bridge upgrades in accordance with the revised standards.

ACCCIM believes that enforcement of the new rulings on overloaded lorries should be implemented in a staggered and consultative manner. Sudden, blanket enforcement could severely disrupt logistics operations and the national supply chain. Premature enforcement risks causing delivery bottlenecks, escalating transport costs, and delaying project timelines.

The Chamber will also take proactive measures to educate its members on the importance of compliance with loading regulations and the long-term benefits of improved road safety practices.

ACCCIM President Datuk Ng Yih Pyng said “By fostering greater awareness and collaboration between government and industry, Malaysia can achieve a balanced approach—one that ensures road safety while maintaining the smooth functioning of its economic supply chains.
