MR. CHONG KHOON LIN

Chong Khoon Lin (1893-1962) was born in Kuala Lumpur. He was the second son of well-known tin miner Chong Yun Hee. Well-educated in Chinese and English and capable, he succeeded and expanded his father’s business empire by venturing into tin mining and rubber plantations. He was the founding director of the Malaysia Chinese Miners Association and held senior posts in various tin-mining related organisations, the Selangor Kah Yin Association, Selangor Kwantung Association, Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. He held senior positions in various government bodies, including city councillor of Kuala Lumpur, and member of the Malayan Federal Legislative Council.

 

He was equally enthusiastic as his father in community and educational causes, having co-founded the Chung Kwo Primary School in Kuala Lumpur which belonged by the Kah Yin Association and led the construction of Kwantung Association Building.

 

He had three sons and six daughters. His business acumen was inherited by his 92-year old daughter Puan Sri Chong Chook Yew who is the chairpersonof the public listed Selangor Properties Berhad and the only woman in the 30 Richest Malaysians List with a wealth of RM1.307 billion. Despite her wealth, she maintains a low profile. She is well-known for the acquisition of a large piece of rubber land in Damansara with her late husband, Tan Sri Wen Tien Kuang, who was active in the Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the MCA, Dongjiao Zong, and turning it into a highly priced residential and commercial property.
